The Koumadarios Art Gallery was inaugurated in 1982 and actually operates as a branch of the National Gallery. The neoclassical building in which it is housed as well as the painting collection are donated from the Koumandarios family, Dolly Goulandri and her brother Georgios Koumadarios, in honor of their art-lover father Ioannis.

The permanent exhibition of the Gallery is composed of 14 oil paintings made by western European painters from the last decades of the 16th century to the early 20th century. The paintings belong to the field of the portrait, the landscape painting, the ethography and the still life. Outstanding among them are the «Lady in blue dress» of Alan Ramsay (1781-1784), the «Allegorical Figures» of Carlo Caliari or Carletto (1570-1596), the «Portrait of Nell Gwyn» of Sir Gottfried Kneller (1646-1723).

The Gallery organizes training programs for all levels of the education and hosts many exhibitions of Laconian poets, such as the one dedicated to Ioannis Ritsos from 20.3.2010 to 3.6.2010.

Panagiotis Doxaras

Being a multifarious personality, with a wide theoretical and artistic work and a fighting action as well, Panagiotis Doxaras, born in Koutifori in Sparta, is considered to be the founder of the Heptanese School and the escort of the Modern Greek art.

He emigrated to Zakynthos where he took religious painting classes while during his passage from Italy he studied painting. Among his works are the Jesus' icon painted as a prelate that he created in 1691 for the Kiria ton Aggelon (church), the portrait of the count Matthias von der Schulenburg, and the Saint Family. In the same time, he translated and composed well-known theoretical texts such as the disquisition of Leonardo da Vinci Trattato de la Pittura and the On painting.

Panagiotis Zografos

Interwoven with the myth of the general Makrigiannis, the folk painter and fighter of the revolution of 1821, Panagiotis Zografos, is along with his two sons the iconographer of the lively war narration «Memoir».

He is believed to come from Vordonia while his biography remains a mystery. His origin however is the one, in conjunction with the common experiences of the history and his practice in the religious painting of the late-Byzantine folklore, that will lead Makrigiannis to choose him in order to stamp his vision in the most absolute and authentic way. This will provide a series of war illustrations, actual historical documents, since along with the vividness of the colors and the folklore tradition unfolds dynamically the cartography and the direction of the Battles for National Independence.

Ilias Dekoulakos

Eminent representative of the 1960 generation, born in the village of Lagia in the East Mani, Ilias Dekoulakos (1929-1998) is a contemplative and at the same time an activistic expression of the symbolic and plastic dimension of the art.

Following a penetrating and critical look through the photographic realism, the creator will castigate and denounce through his work the political and social violence of the established order of the Colonels. His exhibitions «Painting 1968-1973», «Plastic Whole» and «New Figures» are some of his outstanding exhibitions. His politicized attitude remains present through his entire artistic course while his creations of the last period exude anguish for the forthcoming technological mania against the natural creation.

Having resigned from his professorship in the Athens School of Fine Arts, the next year, in 1989, he receives the title of Professor Emeritus.
